Australasian Antarctic Expedition

Day 5 – The vastness

Posted by Naysa - 12 December 2013

I am rocked to sleep at night by the movement of the ship, sometimes a rhythmic back and forth that eases me to sleep, others a violent jerk left to right, that wakes me in the middle of my sleep. But I love it, surrounded, enveloped, and embraced by the ocean. It has accepted us as part of her and we move south together.

It is amazing to be out at sea once again, I have missed it. The vastness, the complete and utter infinite space is mind blowing. I look out into the ocean, like in slow motion with the grace of the albatross - puts me in a state of calm, contentment, peace-movement art.

I am surrounded by brilliant minded individuals with a passion for science and the unknown. We form a collective energy pushing us south across the Antarctic convergence, creeping closer towards Antarctica. The buzz of science and the taste of salt is in the air, the ice edge is only a few days away and I can't wait to see what lays ahead. I have dreamt of this day for as long as I can remember - the ice & the whales.

Sharing the adventure, for our loved ones who could not join us, we wish you were here.
